WHAT IS THE HERO ROLE?
The Hero Role is a personality type that people often adopt when a family member is struggling with addiction. Specifically, the “hero” identity is the child that channels their inner turmoil into positive athletic success, academic performance, or other outward positive traits that mask an adverse home life.
While visibly successful on the outside, these kids often end up repeating the cycle of addiction and other destructive habits after finding dissatisfaction in their accomplishments. It is our goal at THP-MMH to help give kids coming from households of addiction an outlet to hopefully prevent the cycle from continuing. Children coming from homes of addiction have a 4-6x higher likelihood of repeating the cycle of addiction in comparison to children who have grown up in addiction-free households.
